Chapter Five
I’m so deeply asleep that night that when the phone rings it feels like I’m rising from the underworld. Who the fuck is ringing at this time?
“Hello?” I say groggily.
“Simeon?”
The voice is thick and for a second I struggle to recognise it. Then I do and I sit bolt upright in bed. “Ziggy?”
Mick barks and jumps on the bed.
“I’m sorry to ring you but I couldn’t think of anyone else.”
“What is it?” I say sharply. His voice sounds funny, almost like he’s been crying, and I feel the fear displace the cloudiness of sleep. “What’s the matter, sweetheart?”
“It’s Meg.” There’s the sound of a sob on the other line and I get out of bed, clutching the phone like a lifeline.
“What’s happened?”
“She got hurt, Sim. I stopped for a break and she was on the lead and another dog attacked her.” The words break off, and all I can hear are choked sobs that hurt my fucking heart.
“Baby, is she okay?”
“I don’t know. We’re at the vets in Newquay.”
He didn’t get far. I wonder what he’s been doing. “What did the vet say?”
“They’ve taken her in for an operation.” He breaks off, sniffing loudly, and the tears are still in his voice. “I can’t lose her, Sim. I can’t. She’s all I’ve got.”
“She is not all you’ve got,” I say fiercely, pushing my legs into my jeans and grabbing a T-shirt. “You’ve got me.”
“Still?”
“Always,” I say firmly, feeling it echo in my heart. “You’ve always got me, Zig.”
“Sim, I need you.” He falters. “I’m so sorry,” he says, starting to cry again. “I’m so sorry I left you.”
“Love, it’s alright. Give me the postcode.”
“Are you coming?” Amazement and hope are loud in his voice.
“Of course I am,” I say gruffly.
I take the postcode and with a final admonishment to stay there, I run out of the house. The drive doesn’t take long, as the roads are dark and still at this time of night. I pull into the car park of the twenty-four-hour vets and see him immediately, sitting huddled on the steps. He’s dressed in jeans and an old hoodie, and his hair is pulled back in a messy bun, his arms wrapped around himself as if for comfort. When he sees the car he leaps to his feet.
I turn off the engine and I’m barely out of the car before he hits me after running towards me at full pelt. He wraps his arms around me and starts to cry. “I’m so sorry,” he says over and over again.
“Zig, hush, sweetheart,” I say gently, pushing his damp hair back from his face and seeing the trembling in his soft lips. He’s shaking like a whippet, and I wrap my arms around him, quietly holding him tight until the shaking stops.
“How is she?” I finally whisper.
“She’s going to be okay,” he mutters thickly. “She’s got to stay here for a bit and wear one of those cones for a while until the stitches heal, but she’s going to be fine.
